Brazilian Flag

National flag of Brazil

The green represents the Amazon rainforest, and the yellow (gold) the subsoil resources. The blue is the sky, in which the 27 stars represent the 26 federated states and the district of Brasilia. Their arrangement corresponds to the appearance of the sky over Rio de Janeiro at 8.30am on 15 November 1889 (the moment the Republic was proclaimed). Each state is associated with a real star in the sky.

The Brazilian flag and its motto "Ordem e Progresso

The flag of Brazil, officially adopted on 19 November 1889, is a vibrant and distinctive national symbol. It consists of a green background with a yellow lozenge in the centre, inside which is a blue globe crossed by a white stripe bearing the national motto "Ordem e Progresso" (Order and Progress) in green letters. The blue globe is adorned with 27 white stars representing the 26 states of Brazil and the Federal District, arranged to reflect the sky over Rio de Janeiro as it appeared on 15 November 1889, the day the Republic was proclaimed.

The colours of the Brazilian flag have profound meanings: green symbolises the country's lush forests and natural wealth, yellow represents its mineral resources, particularly gold, and blue evokes Brazil's skies and rivers. The motto "Ordem e Progresso" is inspired by the positivist ideas of the philosopher Auguste Comte.

The Brazilian flag is proudly flown on national holidays, such as Independence Day on 7 September, and at international sporting events. It reflects the national identity, cultural diversity and optimism of the Brazilian people, embodying their aspiration for a prosperous and harmonious future.
