Kyokujitsu-ki, the flag of the rising sun
The Japanese flag of the Rising Sun, known as the "Kyokujitsu-ki", is a powerful and historic symbol. It consists of a red circle representing the sun, with sixteen red rays extending outwards on a white background. The flag has a long history, being used since the time of the samurai and officially adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1870.
The Kyokujitsu-ki symbolises the "Land of the Rising Sun", reflecting Japan's geographical position in East Asia. The sun and its rays represent light, prosperity and ascension. This flag is often associated with Japan's military forces and navies.
Today, the Rising Sun flag is still used by the Japanese Self-Defence Forces, particularly the Navy. Although controversial due to its association with Japanese imperialism, it remains a symbol of Japan's rich history and tradition, reflecting the country's strength and resilience.
