The Polish national flag
The flag of Poland is a simple national symbol, but one that is charged with historical and cultural significance. It consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width: white at the top and red at the bottom. Officially adopted on 1 August 1919, the design of the Polish flag reflects the country's traditional colours, which have been present in Poland's coat of arms for centuries.
The white stripe symbolises purity, peace and honesty, while the red stripe represents courage, bravery and the blood shed for the country's independence. These colours are also present in the national emblem, which features a white eagle on a red background.
The flag is proudly flown on national holidays, such as Constitution Day on 3 May and Independence Day on 11 November. It is also used at international sporting events to represent the nation. The Polish flag embodies the country's rich and tumultuous history, as well as its resilient spirit and constant quest for freedom and sovereignty.
