The 82nd Airborne Division: America's First Airborne Division

The 82nd Airborne Division, also known as the 82nd Airborne Division, is a parachute division of the North American Army. The origins of the 82nd Airborne Division date back to World War One. Created on August 25, 1917 at Camp Gordon, the 82nd Airborne Division was then a conventional infantry battalion. It was made up of Americans from all parts of the country, hence the acronym "AA" on the crest, which means "All American". This division fought in France in 1918, and was almost disbanded to become a reserve division at the end of the First World War. It is only in March 1942, that the unit is reconstituted, to become the first American airborne division. Thanks to this unit, the United States carried out, in July 1943, the first airborne offensive in its history, during Operation Husky in Sicily. In August 1942, the "82nd Infantry" officially became the "82nd Airborne". It also distinguished itself during many other missions in Europe during the Second World War, particularly in Italy with Operation Avalanche and in the Netherlands with Operation Market Garden. Since the end of the war, the 82nd Airborne has been engaged in numerous operations, including in Santo Domingo, Vietnam, Honduras, Afghanistan and Iraq.
