The 1st Division Française Libre (1st DFL) during the Second World War
The 1st Division Française Libre (1st DFL) is a legendary Free French unit, formed in 1940 by General Charles de Gaulle to continue the fight against the Axis forces after the defeat of France. Made up of volunteers from the French colonies, troops who had escaped from occupied France and fighters from a wide range of backgrounds, the 1st DFL embodied the spirit of resistance and determination of the Free French forces.
The 1st DFL took part in several major campaigns, including the Syrian campaign in 1941, the battle of Bir Hakeim in Libya in 1942, where it heroically resisted the assaults of Rommel's Afrika Korps, and the Tunisian campaign. In 1944, the division was integrated into the 1st French Army for the Liberation of France. It took part in the fighting in the Alps, then in the Italian campaign, where it played a crucial role in the capture of Mont Cassin, before taking part in the liberation of Provence and the Battle of the Vosges.
The 1st DFL became a symbol of the courage and unwavering commitment of those who chose to continue the fight for France's freedom, despite the difficulties and sacrifices.
The crest of the 1st DFL
The crest of the 1st Division Française Libre (1st DFL) is a powerful symbol of the French Resistance. It features a red Lorraine cross, the emblem of Free France, on a blue background, often accompanied by an anchor symbolising the maritime origins of some of its members. The Lorraine cross, chosen by General de Gaulle, embodies the fight against German occupation and the Vichy regime. This badge, worn with pride by members of the 1st DFL, represents the spirit of resistance, determination and patriotism of the Free French forces, who fought fiercely to liberate their country from Nazi occupation.
