The 4th Armored Division of the US Army

The 4th Armored Division of the US Army, activated in April 1941, played a decisive role in the Second World War. Known for its speed and efficiency, this division was part of General Patton's 3rd Army. It was deployed in Europe in July 1944, after the Normandy landings, and immediately helped to break the German lines during Operation Cobra, paving the way for the rapid liberation of France.

One of its most notable actions was the breakthrough at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, where it succeeded in clearing the encircled American forces. This heroic manoeuvre consolidated its reputation as an elite armoured division. During the war, the 4th Armored Division covered thousands of miles across Europe, making a decisive contribution to the Allied victory over Nazi forces.

The 4th Armored Division crest

The 4th Armored Division crest is rich in symbolism. It features a red triangle edged in gold, symbolising the power of armoured weaponry. Inside the triangle is a stylised tank, representing the division's strike force, accompanied by three yellow lightning bolts symbolising speed, strength and the rapid destruction of enemies. The black background highlights the division's night-time mission, capable of operating effectively in difficult combat conditions. The crest embodies the aggression and mobility for which the 4th Armored Division was renowned during the war.
