History of US M1938 gaiters in the US Army

Introduced in the late 1930s, M1938 gaiters were worn by the majority of US soldiers during the Second World War. They were designed to be worn with the low-cut service boots that were standard in the US Army at the time. Their role was both functional and tactical: they prevented dirt and debris from entering the boots, while providing extra support for the ankle in often unstable environments.

These gaiters were widely used by infantry units and airborne divisions, particularly during the Normandy landings and the fighting in Italy and the Ardennes. Easy to adjust thanks to their system of hooks and straps, they were also cheaper to produce than high boots.
