The 1st Special Service Force during the Second World War

The 1st Special Service Force, nicknamed ‘The Devil's Brigade,’ was a combined American-Canadian elite unit formed in 1942 to conduct special operations during the Second World War. Made up of hand-picked volunteers, this special force was specially trained to carry out missions of sabotage, raids and close combat in difficult environments, such as mountains and snowy regions.

The 1st Special Service Force distinguished itself in several crucial campaigns, notably in Italy, where it played a decisive role in the capture of the Monte La Difensa mountain in December 1943, a German position considered impregnable. It also took part in the invasion of southern France in 1944. Its fearsome reputation earned it the nickname ‘Devil's Brigade’ from the German forces. The unit was disbanded in December 1944, but its legacy has left its mark on the history of special forces in both countries.
