The 517th PRCT (Parachute Regimental Combat Team) during the Second World War
The 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team (PRCT) was an elite airborne unit of the US Army, formed in 1943 to take part in operations in Europe during the Second World War. The 517th PRCT consisted of a parachute infantry regiment, a parachute field artillery battalion, and other support units, making it a self-sufficient force capable of conducting independent missions behind enemy lines.
After intensive training, the 517th PRCT was deployed to Italy in 1944, where it took part in the Anzio campaign. In August 1944, the unit was dropped in southern France during Operation Dragoon, playing a crucial role in the rapid liberation of the region. Later, the 517th fought in the Ardennes, helping to repel the German offensive during the Battle of the Bulge. Their determination, courage and ability to operate deep into enemy territory made the 517th PRCT a particularly respected unit within the Allied forces.
The 517th PRCT patch
The crest of the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team is a strong symbol of the fighting spirit and identity of this airborne unit. The badge features an eagle in flight, a symbol of vigilance, freedom and aerial power, against a sky-blue background, representing the airspace where the paratroopers operated. The eagle holds a golden bolt of lightning in its talons, symbolising the speed and sudden impact of airborne attacks. The red background recalls the sacrifice and bravery of the paratroopers. This patch, worn with pride by the members of the 517th PRCT, embodies their crucial role in airborne operations and their decisive contribution to the Allied victory in Europe.
