The 29th Infantry Division ‘Let's Go!’ during the Second World War 

The 29th Infantry Division, nicknamed ‘Let's Go!’, was one of the most emblematic infantry divisions of the US Army during the Second World War. Composed primarily of National Guard soldiers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C., the division was activated for federal service in 1941. It is best known for its decisive role in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. The 29th Infantry Division was one of two divisions to land on Omaha Beach, where it met fierce resistance from German forces. Despite heavy losses, the soldiers of the 29th succeeded in breaking through enemy defences, paving the way for the Allied invasion of Europe.

After Normandy, the division continued to play a key role in the French campaign, liberating several important towns, including Saint-Lô, before taking part in the Battle of the Bulge.
