The 3rd Infantry Division ‘Rock of the Marne’ during the Second World War

The 3rd Infantry Division, nicknamed the ‘Rock of the Marne’, is one of the most decorated units in the US Army. Activated in 1917, it acquired its nickname during the First World War, but it was during the Second World War that the division solidified its elite reputation. It took part in several major campaigns, starting with Operation Torch in North Africa in 1942, where it fought in the Algeria and Tunisia campaigns.

In 1943, the division played a crucial role in the invasion of Sicily during Operation Husky, then in the difficult landing at Anzio in Italy. It was one of the first units to enter Rome in June 1944. Subsequently, the 3rd Infantry Division was involved in the French campaign, notably in the liberation of Strasbourg. It also crossed the Rhine to take part in the Battle of Germany, advancing into the heart of the Third Reich. The 3rd Infantry Division is renowned for its endurance and fighting spirit, epitomised by its motto ‘We'll stand by’. It is also the division of one of the most decorated soldiers of the war, Audie Murphy.
