The 2nd Rangers Battalion during the Second World War
The 2nd Rangers Battalion is one of the most famous units of the American army during the Second World War. Formed in 1943, this elite battalion was made up of soldiers specially trained to carry out commando missions, often behind enemy lines. Their most emblematic action took place on D-Day, 6 June 1944, when the 2nd Rangers Battalion was tasked with storming the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc in Normandy. Under intense enemy fire, the Rangers climbed the cliffs using ropes and grappling hooks, destroying the German guns that threatened the landing beaches.
After their success at Pointe du Hoc, the 2nd Rangers Battalion continued to play a crucial role in the fighting in Europe, particularly during the Battle of Brest and in the Ardennes. The Rangers were known for their determination, discipline and ability to carry out difficult missions with maximum efficiency. Their motto, ‘Rangers Lead the Way,’ reflects the daring spirit and bravery that characterised the 2nd Rangers Battalion throughout the war.
The crest of the 2nd Rangers Battalion
The crest of the 2nd Rangers Battalion is a distinctive symbol of the heritage and excellence of this elite unit. It consists of a triangular crest bearing the inscription ‘RANGERS’ in white letters on a black background. This sober yet powerful design reflects the battalion's mission: to be at the forefront of the most dangerous military operations. The word ‘RANGERS’ is surrounded by a red border, a symbol of courage and sacrifice. This badge is worn with pride by the soldiers of the 2nd Rangers Battalion, who proved their worth on some of the most perilous battlefields of the Second World War.
