The French flag
The French flag, often referred to as the "Tricolore", is a powerful and internationally recognised national symbol. It consists of three vertical stripes of equal width: blue on the left, white in the centre and red on the right. The flag was officially adopted in 1794 during the French Revolution.
The colours of the tricolour each have a historical and symbolic significance. Blue and red are the traditional colours of Paris, the capital, while white is associated with the monarchy and the colour of royalty. Together, these colours represent national unity and the integration of the monarchy and the republic.
The tricolour flag embodies the values of the French Republic: liberty, equality and fraternity. It is proudly hoisted on national holidays, in particular 14 July, the bank holidays commemorating the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and the birth of the Republic.
