The German flag, a national symbol
The German flag is a powerful and easily recognisable national symbol. It consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width: black at the top, red in the centre and gold at the bottom. The flag was officially adopted on 23 May 1949 for the Federal Republic of Germany and was re-adopted for reunified Germany in 1990.
The colours of the German flag have a profound historical significance. They date back to the liberation struggles against Napoleon in the early 19th century. Black, red and gold were the colours of the German Confederation, an alliance of military forces. These colours symbolise German unity and freedom, as well as democracy and the republic.
The flag is flown on national holidays, such as the Day of German Unity on 3 October, and at sporting and cultural events, embodying national identity and pride. It reflects Germany's tumultuous history and its commitment to democracy and peace
