The British Army's 6th Airborne Division during the Second World War

The British Army's 6th Airborne Division was formed in 1943 and quickly gained an elite reputation during the Second World War. Specialising in airborne operations, the division played a key role in several crucial campaigns. Its first major operation was Operation Overlord, the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. The 6th Airborne Division was dropped east of the River Orne to secure the flanks of the Allied bridgehead, capturing vital bridges, destroying artillery batteries and delaying German counter-attacks.

After Normandy, the division took part in Operation Market Garden in Holland, where it fought fiercely to secure strategic positions behind enemy lines. In December 1944, it was sent to reinforce the Allied lines during the Battle of the Bulge, where it once again proved its effectiveness. In March 1945, the 6th Airborne Division took part in Operation Varsity, the largest airborne operation of the war, crossing the Rhine into Germany.

The 6th Airborne Division is renowned for its courage, discipline and effectiveness in high-risk missions, playing a crucial role in the Allied victory in Europe.

The crest of the 6th Airborne Division

The crest of the 6th Airborne Division is a distinctive symbol of this elite British unit. It depicts Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology, in flight against a burgundy background. Pegasus symbolises the mobility and power of airborne troops, capable of striking quickly behind enemy lines. The design was adopted to embody the spirit of adventure and bravery of British paratroopers. Worn with pride by members of the division, the patch became a symbol of their decisive role in Allied airborne operations, particularly in Normandy, Holland and Germany.
