National flag of Japan
The flag of Japan is a white flag with a large red disc at its centre (representing the sun, more specifically the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu). It is the civil flag, merchant flag and state flag of Japan. It is known as the Hinomaru (hi no maru no hata, "sun disk flag"), or more officially Nisshōki (Japanese standard).).
The Hinomaru, Japan's national flag
The flag of Japan, known as the "Nisshōki" or more commonly "Hinomaru", is a simple but powerful national symbol. It consists of a white background with a red circle in the centre, representing the sun. Officially adopted on 13 August 1999, the design has been in use since the early 19th century.
The red circle symbolises the rising sun, a central element of Japanese culture and mythology. The white represents purity and honesty. As Japan is often referred to as "the land of the rising sun", this flag perfectly reflects this national identity.
The Hinomaru is a symbol of Japanese continuity and tradition. It is hoisted on national holidays, such as National Foundation Day on 11 February, and at sporting and cultural events. The flag is also used in schools and government offices, embodying unity and national pride. It is a reminder of Japan's rich history and resilience.
